Stunning fjords, the amazing Telemark region home of the Telmark Heroes and the lovely compact capital city of Oslo make a perfect combination for our new tour!
We are delighted to add this itinerary to our self-guided Norway programme after it successfully ran as a group tour. Our routes are tried and tested and include marvellous Norwegian scenery and some of our favourite hotels.
The tour takes you from Harwich to the Hook of Holland and an overnight stay near Hamburg in Germany. On then to your destination in Denmark at the northern tip of the country for an overnight stay. The next day there’s a day time ferry crossing to Norway and a short ride to our first scenic hotel stay in Norway. The following morning we set off for the heart of the Telemark area and visit the Telemark Museum at Vemork. This is the famous heavy water plant taken over during the German occupation of Norway and liberated by the Norwegian resistance. The exploits of the resistance have been immortalised in the famous film "Heroes of the Telemark" starring Kirk Douglas and and Richard Harris.
The beautiful Hardanger fjord now awaits us and our two night stay directly on the water's edge will allow you to have a great full day fjord ride out to fully appreciate the scenery or ride to Bergen along the fjord-side road and see the famous Bryggen (wooden houses on the quayside) and take the Floiban funicular for great views of the town and port. On the way to the Hardanger see an ancient Norwegian stave church. Hardanger fjord is the garden of Norway and fruit frees abound on the slopes of the stunning fjord.
Our journey then takes us north to the equally beautiful Geiranger fjord for three nights. This is one of the most stunning destinations in Norway and really is a highlight of your tour. It’s all you expect Norway to be! A deep plunging fjord with an amazing mountain backdrop. Our partner hotel has lovely fjord view rooms (supplement applies - worth the money). Don’t miss the superb Altlantic Coast Highway (see photo)
Take a fjord cruise, head out to Alesund on the coast or more importantly for any motorcyclist, follow the twists and turns of the resurfaced and majestic Trollstigen Canyon Road – eleven hairpin bends carved out of a steep mountainside. Make sure you park your bike at the top and then troll along the walkway to a magnificent viewpoint over a cascading waterfall.
Saying goodbye to the fjords we begin the journey south for a final night in Norway on the outskirts of Oslo. Stay in the shadow of the massive ski jump at a popular hotel built in traditional Norwegian style with ornate dragon style wood carvings.. Go into Oslo this evening or dine locally. We continue our journey southwards toward the port for our ferry back to Denmark but not before we take some time this morning to go into Oslo and visit the Viking Ship Museum at Bygdoy - it really is worth a visit. Taking the afternoon sailing we arrive back in Denmark for our return overnight stay before retracing our tracks back into Germany for a further overnight near Hamburg. Into Holland then for the overnight sailing back to Harwich and home.
