This incredible tour takes us to the Sahara desert, and high into the Atlas Mountains. From Tangier we will visit the colourful medieval city of Chefchaouen (the blue pearl of the north) on our way to Fes (the oldest imperial city in Morocco and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Leaving the Rif mountains we ride into the middle Atlas to Beni Mellal for our third night, before heading to Marrakech where we have a day off the bikes to explore this ancient imperial city, built in the 11th century by Sultan Youssef Ben Tachefine, and was the capital of the kingdom for several dynasties.
On our rest day a guided walking tour will start by visiting the Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs, then the sumptuous Jamaa El-fna Square to discover the snake charmers and the story tellers. After that we will admire the Almohad architecture of Koutoubia mosque, followed by a visit to Menara gardens before returning to the hotel for diner.
After Marrakech we ride into the high Atlas mountains, up and over the Tizi N’Tichka Pass before visiting the ancient Ait Benhaddou (backdrop for many a Hollywood movie) on our way to our next overnight at Ouarzazat, known as the "Gateway to the Sahara". The next day sees us ride the Dades Gorge and stopping for the night at Todra Gorge, heading to the edge of the Sahara the next day and a night at among the dunes at Merzouga.
After this we head back to Tangier, via Midelt to an overnight stop on the shores of Sidi Ali lake, and finally via Meknes and the Rif mountains again.
This tour benefits from a local, motorcycle-mounted guide, along with a support vehicle driven by a qualified mechanic while we are in Morocco. We use good-quality 4-star hotel accommodation in Spain, and in Morocco we aim to stay in the equivalent of 4-star standard hotels where available. In more remote locations, accommodation may be equivalent to 3-star or the best available in the area, often family-run establishments with plenty of local character. Please be aware that hotel standards in Morocco are generally lower than those of similarly rated hotels in Europe, unless you are staying in well-established tourist areas such as Marrakesh.
This tour is best suited to riders who are already experienced European tourers and are looking for an extra challenge. You will encounter a wide variety of road conditions, unpredictable hazards, and a different culture, cuisine, and way of life. While the route is entirely on tarmac roads, surfaces can range from excellent to very poor. Riders must remain alert for diesel spills and other road users who follow local driving customs rather than what we might consider the “Highway Code”. A high level of awareness, strong forward planning, and good hazard perception skills are essential.
Africa is a diverse continent with a rich history and dramatic landscapes, from the Atlas Mountains to the vast Sahara Desert.
