On 6th June 1944 over 156,000 Allied soldiers landed on five beaches in Normandy, with over 23,000 paratroopers landing at strategic targets inland, heralding the beginning of the end of World War Two.
These beaches would witness what remains the largest amphibious assault in history. The troops on the beaches were supported by nearly 200,000 sailors aboard nearly 7000 vessels (only 200 of which were warships), and sorties flown by thousands of aircrew in over 9000 aircraft (not counting the gliders), all in all a remarkable undertaking.
Over 4 days your tour will cover many significant sites in the Normandy area and will be led by battlefield guide Eugenie Brooks. Her Father was a WW2 decorated fighter pilot flying spitfires and hurricanes and her Grandfather served with the Rifle Brigade throughout the Great War, in which three of her Great Uncles were killed – so military history has been a keen interest and passion of hers from a young age. During her career in the Metropolitan Police, she served for 10 years in Traffic Division as a motorcyclist and became the first ever female supervisor of the Special Escort Group of Royalty Protection Department. She still enjoys riding motorcycles and currently rides a sparkly purple BMW R1200 GS upon which she has led many tours around Normandy, Ypres and the Somme.
The tour starts in Portsmouth where we visit the D-Day Museum prior to your first group dinner near the mouth of Portsmouth harbour, before we follow in the troops footsteps and sail overnight to Normandy.
We spend two nights in a quality three-star Hotel well located for the Normandy beaches and will visit many iconic sites including Arromanches, Pegasus Bridge, Longues sur Mer German Gun Battery, Omaha Beach and the British Normandy Memorial overlooking Gold Beach. Whether you’re going to learn more about this historic event, or on a mission to track down some family history, this is an absorbing tour. Eugenie will bring the battlefield to life with the stories of the men and women who participated in the largest seaborne invasion in history.
D-Day may have been over 80 years ago, but the legacy lives on in the historical sites that we will visit. Come with us and see for yourself...
