This incredible tour takes us to the Sahara desert, and high into the Atlas Mountains. From Tangier we will visit the colourful medieval city of Chefchaouen (the blue pearl of the north) on our way to Fes (the oldest imperial city in Morocco and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Leaving the Rif mountains we ride into the middle Atlas to Beni Mellal for our third night, before heading to Marrakech where we have a day off the bikes to explore this ancient imperial city, built in the 11th century by Sultan Youssef Ben Tachefine, and was the capital of the kingdom for several dynasties.
On our rest day a guided walking tour will start by visiting the Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs, then the sumptuous Jamaa El-fna Square to discover the snake charmers and the story tellers. After that we will admire the Almohad architecture of Koutoubia mosque, followed by a visit to Menara gardens before returning to the hotel for diner.
After Marrakech we ride into the high Atlas mountains, up and over the Tizi N’Tichka Pass before visiting the ancient Ait Benhaddou (backdrop for many a Hollywood movie) on our way to our next overnight at Ouarzazat. The next day sees us ride the Dades Gorge and stopping for the night at Todra Gorge, heading to the edge of the Sahara the next day and a night at among the dunes at Merzouga.
After this we head back to Tangier, via Midelt to an overnight stop on the shores of Sidi Ali lake, and finally via Meknes and the Rif mountains again.
This tour benefits from a local motorcycle mounted guide, and a support vehicle driven by a qualified mechanic while we are in Morocco. We use good standard 4* hotel accommodation in Spain, and in Morocco we aim to use the equivalent of 4* standard hotel accommodation where available. In some more remote locations, we may use equivalent 3* hotels or the best in area, which could be a more family run establishment, with character. Please be aware that Moroccan hotels are generally lower in standard than the same rating in equivalent European hotels, unless you are in a well trodden tourist area, such as Marrakesh.
This tour is normally best for riders who are already experienced tourers in Europe and who are looking for that extra challenge of a varied road conditions, unpredictable hazards, coupled with a different culture, foods, and way of life. On your ride you will encounter poor road surfaces as well as excellent ones, but the route is all tarmac roads. However, you will need to watch out for diesel, as well as other road users who will work to the local rules of the road as opposed to what we would consider the “Highway Code”. You need to be highly aware with good forward planning and hazard perception skills.
