POSSIBLE SUPPLEMENT DEPENDING ON FERRY COST
Join us on this brilliant tour to the rugged northwest coast of Spain! After arriving in Santander we take a short ride into the Picos and our first hotel, a Parador in the heart of the Picos mountains. Heading further west we have two nights in Cangas del Narcea to stay at another Parador which was orignally a monastery, offering a magnificent modern spa with an heated indoor pool, sauna, hydro-massage pool and gym. Our optional ride-out the next day will explore the northern coast, looping up to Cudillero, which is regarded as one of the prettiest traditional fishing villages in the north of Spain.
Heading west again we arrive at Santiago de Compostela, with three nights at our 4 star hotel which overlooks the town, boasting its own chapel, a swimming pool, sauna, and gym for those feeling energetic. Santiago de Compostela is the capital of northwest Spain’s Galicia region, and is the culmination of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, being the alleged burial site of the Biblical apostle St. James. The Catherdals elaborately carved stone facades open onto grand plazas within the medieval walls of the old town, and we can wander down to the adjacent Plaza da Quintana de Vivos for a drink, and watch local street performers entertain the crowds.
With two days for ride-outs we will spend one day heading to A Coruna on the northern coast, and another going west to Cap Finisterre before we head south to our next base at Ourense for two nights, which is known for its hot springs, the 12th-century Ourense Cathedral that houses the ornate Gate of Paradise, and the iconic Ponte Romana bridge, with its trademark arches spanning the river Minho. Our ride-out from here will take us south to Portugals Peneda-Gerês National Park and back.
We begin our route back to Santander with a splendid ride through rural Spain to an overnight stay at Leon, returning to the twisty magnificence of the Picos de Europa National Park we will stay at another Parador in Cangas de Onis that was the former San Pedro de Villanueva Monastery for our last night in Spain, another hotel with its own chapel, as well as excavated Roman ruins. There is a short but entertaining ride into Santander the following day to board the ferry back to blighty, and being scheduled to arrive back at 10:00 there is plenty of time to get all the way home.
