We cross the Irish Sea at 50mph on the latest HSS Stena from Holyhead to Dublin and head for Galway on the West Coast of Ireland. We spend two nights in Galway a town where friendly pubs regale their customers with traditional music and song into the small hours. Galway has a strong artistic and cultural heritage and yet manages to retain an intimate and friendly atmosphere.
We will ride our motorcycles across large tracts of open countryside that evoke the true spirit of Ireland - ruined towers, fortified country houses, medieval remains, stone circles, megalithic tombs and cathedrals that date back to the twelfth century.
Next day after a hearty traditional and very filling full irish breakfast enjoy a motorbike ride across the extraordinary landscape of the Burren, a veritable treasure house of historic ruins and we gain a fuller understanding from our stop at the Burren Heritage Centre in Kilfenora - the site of one of many (and there are many) twelfth century churches that are still in use today. Onwards on our motorcycles to one of the oldest caves in Ireland - over bridged chasms, under weird formations and alongside the thunderous waterfall which sometimes gently sprays the unsuspecting visitor!
The following day we depart Galway for a two night stay in Killarney. It's a magical place for this part of Ireland remains largely unspoilt and underpopulated. The roads are narrow and the scenery sublime. Small villages with lawned or thatched roofs and everywhere a pleasant welcome to be sure... On our motorbike ride out around the Ring of Kerry we should be able to complete a figure of eight to ride the Ring of Beara around the Dingle peninsula. Every visit to Ireland is different. If the sun shines it's absolutely glorious, but even when the wind gets up the waves crashing full force gives a fascinating spectacle - a sight often repeated along the exposed western coastline.
Our tour takes in a visit to the two million year old caverns at Ailwee, a stop at the Cliffs of Moher, and a route that passes the famous landmarks at Dungaire Castle and Kylemore Abbey. An optional day out from Galway takes us to Clifden along a wild, at times barren, coastal route that yields extraordinary landscapes and an unforgettable visual experience.
