The Ardennes, rolling green countryside, twisty turny roads, scenic rivers, pretty villages, lots of World War II history and easy access from the ports make this an ideal destination for a short break or a first trip into Europe on your motorcycle. Ride into Belgium from Calais or it’s even shorter from the Hook of Holland if you prefer to sail with Stena.
Your base will be in the popular town of Bouillon with its fortified hilltop castle and scenic river – there are even pedalos for warm, sunny days. Our three star hotel is well located overlooking the castle and river and is convenient for the local bars and restaurants. All rooms are en suite, there’s a lovely terrace with beautiful views, a restaurant, bar, buffet breakfast and secure parking.
Once you have settled in there are plenty ride out possibilities! The nearby “Giant’s Tomb” view point offers a stunning panorama of the curious hill surrounded by the river. Explore Durbuy with its tiny cobbled streets and old houses and picturesque Dinant. The Belgian capital, Brussels, is less than one hundred miles away and the neighbouring country of Luxembourg too. But there is lots more to see more locally.
The Ardennes played a crucial role in World War II and was the scene of a turning point in the war. On the local narrow, twisty roads Hitler’s Panzers struggled and thanks to good winter weather the Allies were able to gain territory. There were many casualties, in fact it became the single biggest and bloodiest battle that American forces experienced in World War II, and the Ardennes Offensive is fittingly commemorated with a monument and museum in Bastogne. There are other museums and sights and we have routes to take in the most strategic points of the British in the Battle of the Ardennes (nicknamed the “Battle of the Bulge” by the Americans). Malmedy, the scene of a tragic massacre, also merits a visit. Look out for the Milestones of the “Road to Liberty” as you approach Bastogne which mark the route followed by Patton’s 3rd Army.
So whether you are looking for a short, scenic break taking in super roads, lush verdant countryside and some Belgian beer (when not riding!) or wishing to take in some of the historical sights of the area you can’t go wrong!
