This is a unique opportunity to discover the ever popular battlefields of the Somme region of Northern France. A rural area, it’s a wonderful place for bikers who like empty country lanes, huge vistas of open countryside, taking in the scenery and stopping for an occasional coffee or lunch. The added interest of the battlefields lends real purpose to your trip.
You will be based near Peronne, with its famous war museum, ideally placed for your full day ride out to the major memorials. Included in your itinerary (which covers the Somme from the North to the South), is the Sheffield Pals battlefield at Serre, Newfoundland Park and its preserved trenches, Thiepval Monument to the Missing, a stop for lunch (not included) at La Boisselle with a visit to Lochnager mine crater, The Australian battlefied at Pozieres and finally the South African National Memoral Museum and preserved Delville Wood at Longueval.
Your English BMW riding host, who will accompany you on your ride out is a leading expert on the area. He has been a Curator with the Royal Armouries, written eleven books including one on the Battles of the Somme, lectured extensively worldwide and has been a consultant on several TV programmes. You couldn’t get a better guide!
Accommodation is in a traditional farmhouse set in rolling Somme countryside in a small village that was fought over by the Allies in World War One. In the evening the welcoming lounge is a comfortable place to relax after a busy day. Whether you’re going for a short break or on a mission to track down some family history this is an absorbing tour.
Even if you can only manage a one night stopover, you will be guaranteed a fascinating and comfortable stay.
