Itinerary suggestion - add a night and stay at Colditz Castle!

It's no surprise that the Harz is a magnet for motorcyclists from around the world!  With hundreds of kilometres of virtually empty mountain roads and more twists and turns than you can imagine, it is the perfect place to ride your bike.  Surrounded by forests & wildlife, the Harz is famed for its historic cities, quality wine, sweeping bends, amazing scenery and most importantly a warm welcome!. Truly a motorcycling mecca!  Our included ride out routes will introduce you to some of the best the region has to offer!

The area is easily reached after an overnight ferry sailing and to break up the journey we have INCLUDED a great overnight stop  near the Dambusters Mohnesee and Eder dams.  For these interested in the area you can add an extra night en route to the Harz and do some of our great rideouts around the Sauerland region.  This has proved to be very popular add-on.  Ask for our suggested itinerary if you would like to travel Dover/Calais.

On the night of May 16th, 1943, nineteen Lancaster bombers of 617 Squadron took off from Scampton in Lincolnshire. They had three primary targets: the Möhne, Eder and Sorpe dams. At 00.56 hours, the Möhne Dam was breached and by 01.54 hours so was the Eder Dam. Today you can ride your motorcycle around the lake and wonder just how Barnes Wallis could conceive the Bouncing Bomb that proved such a morale booster to our folks back home at a crucial point in World War Two.

Once in the Harz you can ride your bike to Torfhaus, northern Germany's biggest weekend bike meet and with its super views towards the "Brocken" mountain it is an absolute must.  On a warm sunny day expect to see lots of enthusiastic riders (see photo) and take the opportunity to swap some interesting ride out tips!  Our base is ideally located too for the Sachsenring and Oschersleben race circuits and the Kyffhauser with thirty-seven sets of hairpins!  Visit the medieval cities of Stolberg, Goslar (a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site), Einbeck, Wernigerode  & Northeim all of which are within easy reach.  There are plenty of castles too including Quedlinburg and infamous Colditz which can be visited on a days ride out.  Colditz Castle has over a thousand years of history and there is now a fascinating museum with artefacts and guided tours detailing the legendary escapes made by the Allied POWs. The German military authorities had considered Colditz to be escape-proof!   Did you see the TV programme about the POW glider? 

The Harz boasts the most beautiful cities in the Niedersachsen Anhalt, many restored to their original glory, Hannover, Hamelin, famous for the story of the Pied Piper which is regularly re-enacted during the summer months, and Braunschweig are just a short ride away.  For those interested in recent history, the historic sites of Belsen (concentration camp) and Dora Mittelbau (V1 & V2 rockets) are also nearby. Dora Mittelbau was a Nazi Germany labour camp that provided workers for the Mittelverk V-2 rocket factory. The V-2 was the pregenitor of all modern rockets and over 60,000 prisoners from twenty one nations passed through Dora.

1989 saw the Fall of the Berlin Wall - an event which was celebrated throughout Germany.  In the Harz it is easy to criss-cross between what was formerly East and West Germany and we have suggestions including some interesting sights from the Cold War years.  If the cities appeal then stays in Berlin and Dresden can be arranged as an add-on to the tour.

Stay in a centrally located hotel  where all rooms are en-suite.  There is secure parking, a sunny terrace for beers or coffee in the late afternoon and evening and there is also a small spa area for soothing away those aches and pains. The hotel has its own restaurant but it is easy to walk to bars, restaurants, shops and nightclubs, two swimming pools and thermal spas.  Room upgrades on request to Comfort Rooms - larger rooms with balcony. 

Our partner hotel in the Harz is always busy making imprvements and has finished a new room complete with a small kitchen offering microwave, coffee machine, cooler and kettle.  A nice addition for those who like to have some extra room facilities (supplement applies)

Extend our standard itinerary.  Suggested "add-on" to this tour - Leipzig (for a leisurely time at Colditz, Berlin and Augustusburg motorcycle musem), Poland, north Germany and Peenemunde (site of World War II development and production of the V2 rocket).  Or for a leisurely return journey enjoy overnights in Alsfeld and then lovely Monschau in the Eiffel.
